The Red Herring is more than just a restaurant. Combining the uniqueness of the peaceful waterside location with contemporary décor and the freshest seafood.

  • Since 1921, when Arthur Auguste first began operating his oyster business off the pylons in the clam East Fremantle waters, the site has been part of local history, an iconic location attracting visitors from far and wide.
  • Now, people come to enjoy the modern style and casual elegance of the award winning Red Herring. The menu is an exciting reflection of Australian contemporary cuisine, with an emphasis on fresh, seasonal produce.
  • Relaxed breakfasts, long lunches, sunset cocktails and moonlit dinners – the Red Herring has captured the essence of stylish waterside dinning, and made it its own.


Adjacent to this site in 1912 Anthanasios Avoustis, later known as Arthur Auguste, began his oyster wholesale business. Crates submerged in the Swan River kept the oysters fresh and it was from their home on 26 Riverside Road that Arthur and his wife Panaula ran the business.

Together they helped many fellow migrants in the early days providing them with board and lodging in their family home. Church services were held in a large room at the side of their house.

After his death in 1932, Panaula and the three daughters, Helene, Gela and Dorothea, established a restaurant over the Swan River adjacent to the bedded crates. They called is Auguste’s Oyster Beds.

In 1945 it was bought by Gela and her husband Bill Thornett and renamed the Oyster Beds. It remained in the family until 1966. It was renamed “The Red Herring” in 1997 by the current owners.

To this day the Auguste family is remembered for their links to the oyster industry, the restaurant, and their contribution to the Greek Community and the Greek Orthodox Church.

Is an exciting new ‘restaurant within a restaurant’ which will showcase the very best of Japanese cuisine prepared as you watch by our team of highly trained & talented chefs.

Sakana Bar offers set menus from $58 for 5 courses to $78 for 8 courses, inclusive of complimentary Sake on arrival. Alternatively alacarte dining options are available.

Two of our most popular dishes are: thinly sliced aged beef fillet tataki, served with slow braised leek, ponzu sauce & crispy soft shell crab nori roll w/ wasabi mayo and spicy flying fish roe.

There is a range of Sake’s, Umeshu, Shochu & Japanese beers to accompany the Sakana Bar menu.

To oversee Sakana Bar & The Red Herring traditional menu, Kenny McHardy has been appointed Executive Chef. Kenny joins The Red Herring after 4 years as head chef at Coco’s South Perth. Working alongside Kenny McHardy is Brendan Martin who was the head chef at Chunagon Japanese Restaurant in Fremantle for many years.
